The Story Behind Ruth Joyce Art
Artistry rooted in the dark, the mysterious and the unusual
I create all of my designs in my little art space in Wallington, South London.
I have been doodling and painting for as long as I can remember. It’s a passion that has never left me, not as a moody teenager back in the 00’s (what a time to be a teen!) nor as a very sleep deprived new mum.
I love to draw and paint with watercolours, but in the last few years I have enjoyed experimenting with lino cut printing. As a big medieval history nerd, this craft has a lovely, old fashioned feel to it. Planning, carving and printing a design takes a lot of time and care, and seeing the finished print is always such a joy.

I find inspiration everywhere, from a trip to a ruined castle to an article in my history magazine (I know, I know - such a nerd!), from a beautiful tattoo design to a ramshackle old building. I like to capture a sense of history in all my designs - when I look at a scene, I squint a little and wonder what it looked like hundreds of years ago.
I am so lucky to live in a wonderful part of south London with gorgeous old buildings, fascinating folklore and so many people who absolutely love art of all sorts.
